Madagascar – Part 4 – Anjajavy Arrival

Madagascar continued from Madagascar – Part 3 – Antananarivo

We had experienced so much in Madagascar in our first two nights, we couldn’t imagine what the next seven days had in store for us. Our guide picked us up early in the morning to go back to the airport, but this time we were flying a MUCH smaller plane. This was such a highlight of the trip.  Rather than the regular airport arrival, we were taken to the private area of the airport, and this was totally my moment to feel like a rock star (they literally rolled out the red carpet for us).

Dave sat co-pilot for the flight!

It was a short flight, and the entire time we could see Madagascar and its beautiful and vast greenery below us.  We unfortunately did see some slash and burn sites during the flight (some in action), which is a HUGE issue facing Madagascar right now.

We shared our flight with a man that I came to learn was the creator of  Anjajavy L’hotel, and while Dave was co-piloting, he shared some great stories with me on our flight into Anjajavy, and even requested the pilot do a fly over of the hotel before we landed so we could see it from air, which was a real treat.

Anjajavy was really what made us take the plunge to go to Madagascar.  Once I read about this magical place, nothing else compared.  It was adventure, remote, beach, wildlife, etc etc…  Anjajavy lived up to all of my expectations and its STELLAR TripAdvisor reviews. I originally read about Anjajavy on another blog that KA sent me after I told her I was thinking of Madagascar as a destination.  Upon our arrival to the “Anjajavy International Airport,” we were beginning to get a sense of what was ahead…

Once we arrived, we were greeted by Cedric, the manager of the hotel, and his wife, and we took about a 30-40 minute scenic drive from the airport to the hotel through the forest which was a treat of its own.  Within minutes we started spotting the wildlife of the region and saw tsingy, baobabs and mangroves to our hearts content.  The Anjajavy Forest is a dry deciduous forest and because it is so remote from the major city center of Tana (hence the need for the tiny plane), it is more protected from the slash and burn sites and therefore provides a sanctuary for wildlife making Anjajavy a mecca for endemic and endangered species.

When we finally arrived at Anjajavy, we were greeted by the whole staff outside the hotel singing and dancing a traditional welcome for our arrival (which we later learned was not for us, it was for our flight-mate, the creator of the hotel.  But we pretended it was for us).  After our awesome welcome, we were given a delicious cocktail and introduced to what would be our home for the next week…

“Home” –  The view at Anjajavy.

When we arrived, we learned that there was only one other couple staying at the hotel and they would be leaving in just a couple of days, and besides the creator, we would practically have the place to ourselves for the majority of our stay.  This is clearly one of the perks of traveling during the “wet” season (early December).  While we were there in this so called “wet” season, it really only rained in the middle of the night, which cooled things off, so we didn’t mind.  Other than a few hours one day, it was all sunshine. Our villa was spectacular. If I could build my house in the style of this villa, I would. Actually, if I could just live in that villa, I would.  Everything at this hotel was made of rich and warm palissandre wood, or Madagascar rosewood, which is a rare and beautiful wood from the country.  (For those of you who want specifics, I think our villa was #24?)

Our villa and the hotel is clearly beautiful, but this was only the beginning of this paradise.  Stay tuned for more Anjajavy in Part 5…
